Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the ASB Classic and decided to start her 2026 season by representing Japan at the United Cup. Her updated schedule aims to help her reach peak form before the Australian Open.
She had earlier planned to begin her year in Auckland after reaching the final there this season. However, she later informed ASB Classic tournament director Nicolas Lamperin about her revised plan and shift to Australia.
Osaka Chooses National Duty Over Auckland Return
Osaka personally contacted Lamperin to confirm her decision. She explained that she would now prepare in Australia and skip the Auckland event.
The former World No. 1 will play for Japan alongside Shintaro Mochizuki at the United Cup in Perth. The tournament runs from January 2 to 11, with Japan set to face Britain and Greece in the group stage.
This move allows Osaka to compete in Australian conditions and gain strong match practice before Melbourne. The Australian Open, the season’s first Grand Slam, begins on January 18 at Melbourne Park.
Auckland organisers expressed understanding and acknowledged her choice. They also recalled her impressive run to the final earlier this year, which delighted local fans.
Osaka’s decision highlights her focus on entering the new season with maximum preparation and confidence.
