Leylah Fernandez Reflects on 2025 Season

Leylah Fernandez wrapped up her 2025 season after producing one of her most consistent stretches on the WTA Tour. The Canadian climbed to World No. 22, secured two titles, and re-established herself as a major contender heading into 2026.

Her year featured steady progress, highlighted by championship runs in Washington and Japan. That level of success looks even more impressive considering she briefly considered stepping away from competition earlier this year. Instead, she pushed forward and delivered her strongest results in months.

Fernandez played her final event of the season at the Hong Kong Open, where her campaign ended in the semi-finals against Victoria Mboko. Mboko later claimed the title after defeating Cristina Bucsa in the final.

Fernandez Sends Emotional Message After a Breakthrough Year

The 23-year-old looked back at her 2025 journey through a heartfelt Instagram post, expressing pride and gratitude for how far she climbed this season. She made it clear she wished the calendar had not come to a close.

Fernandez wrote: “Another year doing what I love most, another year filled with sweat, laughter, pain, wins, losses, flights, new lessons, encounters and milestones…

“I actually didn’t want this season to end. Two WTA titles, and my biggest one yet, in Washington DC. And I love that I did it with all of you guys by my side. Thanks for your support all season long. I’m hungry for more, let’s keep going.”

“I can’t end the year without thanking my team – without you, any of that would be possible. My coaches Jorge, Abdul and Lauren, and my hitting partners, Federico and Jaume. With love, Leylah.”

Her words signal her mindset heading into 2026, where she will aim for deeper runs at big events and a push toward the top 10.

A Look Back at Fernandez’s Washington Title Run

Fernandez’s performance at the Washington Open stood out as one of the defining moments of her season. She opened confidently, beating Australian teenager Maya Joint in straight sets. She followed up with a gritty win over top seed Jessica Pegula, showing both discipline and composure in a three-set battle.

Fernandez kept her momentum going as she outplayed Taylor Townsend, closing out the match in straight sets. In the semifinals, she delivered one of the best victories of her season by edging Elena Rybakina in a dramatic three-tie-break thriller.

The final saw Fernandez dominate Anna Kalinskaya, sealing the championship with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory.
