Karen Khachanov produced a stunning display of resilience to defeat Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), securing his place in the final of the National Bank Open. The match saw Khachanov fight through a tense third-set tie-break, saving a match point to clinch victory in Toronto.
“I had to dig deep and lift my level. It was a very demanding, very mental, very physical match. So I’m very happy to get the win after losing some easy ones to him in recent years,” said Khachanov, reflecting on the tough challenge.
Zverev’s Critical Error Hands Khachanov the Win
The match, lasting 2 hours and 53 minutes, was filled with unforced errors from both players. Khachanov made 17 unforced forehand errors, while Zverev struggled with 22, including a decisive mistake on match point.
Zverev served for a tie-break, but Khachanov’s second serve on the ad court set up Zverev’s backhand, which he sent into the net, handing the Russian the match. “I thought I was very brave in the tie-break, I just missed,” Zverev admitted. “I missed some balls that I wish I wouldn’t have missed, but that’s the way it is.”
