Iga Swiatek faces new criticism after agreeing to play a China exhibition event despite earlier concerns about intense scheduling. The issue gained attention again when fans recalled her June statement: “The scheduling is super intense. It’s too intense. There’s no point for us to play over 20 tournaments in a year.”
Swiatek recently wrapped up her 2025 season with 64 wins and 17 losses, helping Poland secure a spot in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup. Many expected her to reset before the new year. Instead, she shocked followers by adding another off-season commitment.
The World Tennis Continental Cup praised her in a glowing Instagram post. The caption said, “Six Grand Slam titles. Twenty-five tour victories. 125 weeks at the top of the world. Yet what defines her isn’t the numbers — it’s the rhythm. The calm before impact. The quiet that comes before another winner blurs past, and yes… maybe her ever-growing towel collection. Iga Świątek joins Team Europe — bringing her unmatched focus, explosive groundstrokes, and champion’s resolve to Shenzhen. A player who builds pressure point by point.”
The exhibition will be held from December 26–28, 2025, with Belinda Bencic, Arthur Fils, Wang Xinyu, Zhang Zhizhen, Andrey Rublev, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Flavio Cobolli in action.
Off-Season Exhibitions Crowd the Calendar Further
The packed December schedule includes another exhibition in Macau from December 27–28 featuring Mirra Andreeva, Jakub Mensik, Jack Draper, Juncheng Shang and Alexandra Eala, captained by Conchita Martinez and Li Na.
A third showcase is set for Dubai on December 28, where Aryna Sabalenka will take on Nick Kyrgios in a “Battle of the Sexes” match.
These events take place during a period many consider the only break players get. However, the rise of high-profile exhibitions leaves athletes with little true recovery time.
Swiatek’s decision stands out because it appears to contradict her recent stance. Yet exhibitions operate differently from WTA competitions. They offer lighter rallies, creative shot-making, friendly energy, and reduced physical demands. Although not risk-free, they remain far less punishing than tour matches. The lucrative appearance fees also influence participation.
Still, her choice fuels debate as she previously criticised the crowded calendar. She now joins the growing list of stars choosing extra events. Carlos Alcaraz is also preparing for a pre-season exhibition despite discussing overload earlier.
