Felix Auger-Aliassime delivered a statement performance at the US Open 2025, stunning German third seed Alexander Zverev with a fearless display of power and precision. The Canadian fought back to win 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-4, producing one of his finest victories on a Grand Slam stage.
The 25-year-old had never beaten a top-five ranked player at a major in seven previous attempts. This time, his booming serve, relentless groundstrokes, and trademark athleticism all clicked perfectly. His aggressive approach denied Zverev rhythm and extended the German’s wait for a long-desired Slam title.
“In practice I felt like I was doing things really well. Mentally, [I’ve had] more clarity in my game and how I want to play,” Auger-Aliassime said. “A performance like this doesn’t fall out of the sky. But you never know also when you’re going to play that level on any given day.”
Zverev’s Grand Slam Frustration Grows
For 28-year-old Zverev, the defeat was another reminder of his struggles in the final stages of majors. Tipped as one of the best players never to win a Slam, he has reached three finals but fallen short each time. His most painful moment remains the 2020 US Open, where he blew a two-set lead in the final.
In search of belief, Zverev recently hired Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal. After a disappointing Wimbledon exit, he trained at Nadal’s academy in Mallorca and spoke about receiving psychological help. Yet, despite Nadal’s push to instil confidence, Zverev could not overcome Auger-Aliassime, who was ironically coached by Nadal between 2021 and 2024.

Auger-Aliassime now meets Russian 15th seed Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. Another thriller saw Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik defeat 14th seed Tommy Paul in five sets to set up a showdown with defending champion Jannik Sinner.
