US Open 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev continues to remain a fan favorite despite enduring a difficult run of results. His unforgettable celebration after beating Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final—copying a FIFA video game move—showcased his unique personality and endeared him to tennis supporters worldwide.
“Only legends will understand – what I did was L2+left,” Medvedev told the New York crowd back then. While some laughed, others were puzzled. Yet the quirky reaction perfectly explained why the 29-year-old Russian is viewed as one of the sport’s most engaging characters.
Medvedev on Authenticity and Fan Love
Medvedev believes his appeal lies in staying genuine. “I just try to be myself,” he told BBC Sport. “If some people find me interesting, I’m happy. Some people might think I’m boring, and that’s OK.”
The ATP Tour recently surprised him with a book of positive fan messages praising his honesty, humor, and charisma. Medvedev admitted the comments resonated with him. “I think my friends would describe me as a fun person to hang around and talk to,” he said with a smile.
A Different Side on Court
Away from the spotlight, Medvedev often appears calm and approachable. But in competition, his fiery nature sometimes takes over. Earlier this year, he was fined more than £60,000 for smashing a net camera during the Australian Open. In the past, he has argued with officials and shown frustration toward crowds.
“When I’m on the court I hate to lose; I love to win,” Medvedev admitted. “My first goal is to win the match, so it brings a lot of adrenaline out.” He compared his outbursts to everyday stress. “I cannot honk on the court, but if I could I would do it and never scream or something like that.”
Searching for Answers Before New York
Now ranked 13th, Medvedev has slipped outside the top 10 for only the second time in six years. His serve, once a key weapon, has faltered, and his hard-court dominance has waned. He has just one Grand Slam victory to his name this year.
“I could find 10 reasons and I would not know which one is the main reason,” Medvedev told the ATP website. “Whatever we do, we just try to improve. So we sat down with the team. Where can we do things better? What can we change?”
While a repeat of his 2021 US Open triumph appears unlikely, Medvedev’s unpredictability makes him a dangerous contender. If he stages a revival, fans may see another playful, video game-inspired celebration. “I’m not gaming when on tour,” he said. “But when I’m home – and the children are asleep – I’m playing. So you never know.”
