Coco Gauff booked her place in the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lucia Bronzetti. The American star, who received a bye into the last 16, overcame early service breaks in both sets to secure her third WTA 1000 quarter-final appearance of the season after Madrid and Rome.
Gauff’s previous opponent, Dayana Yastremska, withdrew due to injury, giving her an extra day of rest before Thursday’s match. While she admitted feeling a little rusty at the start, Gauff quickly found her rhythm and finished the job in straight sets.
“It’s super special to play on this court, I have so many memories from 2023,” Gauff said. “I played controlled but aggressive, but sometimes I was a bit passive. It’s tough because the ball really flies and she was giving me no pace. I had chances (when she lost serve) but I missed a couple of balls. I was still able to close it out.”
Paolini Cruises Past Krejcikova to Arrange Rematch
Jasmine Paolini stormed into the quarter-finals by beating two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. The Italian seventh seed took full advantage of her opponent’s restricted movement to claim a dominant win.
“I think she wasn’t at 100 percent, but she’s an unbelievable player,” Paolini said. “She can put the ball wherever she wants every time, I don’t know how she does this. But I’m happy that I tried to stay there mentally until the last point.”
The upcoming quarter-final will be the fifth meeting between Gauff and Paolini, with both winning twice. On hard courts, Gauff has the edge, having beaten Paolini at this same stage in 2023 before lifting the Cincinnati title.
This encounter will also serve as a chance for Gauff to avenge her loss to Paolini in the Rome final earlier this season, while Paolini aims to keep her winning momentum alive.
