Coco Gauff fought her way into the US Open 2025 second round after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic in a tense three-set battle. The defending champion, who has now seen five of her seven opening singles matches at the US Open go the distance, overcame her service struggles to seal a dramatic 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 victory.

The clash lasted over three hours, with Gauff hitting 10 double faults and missing several chances before securing the win. Reflecting on her performance, she admitted: “Yeah, it was a tough match. I had chances for it to be straight sets. Ajla was tough. It wasn’t the best, but I’m happy to get through to the next round.”

Gauff acknowledged her missed opportunities, adding: “I had so many chances and [I knew] eventually it was going to come. I had chances to close out in two, I had chances to go up a double break so many times, so yeah I was just like ‘eventually one of these are going to go my way and it ended up happening.”

Gauff’s Serving Struggles Continue

The American’s serve came under pressure throughout, with back-to-back double faults at 5-4 in the decider nearly costing her the match. However, she quickly regained composure, broke back, and held serve to clinch the victory.

Speaking about recent changes, Gauff said: “Honestly, it’s been really tough, mentally exhausting. But I’m trying. It wasn’t the best today, but it was an improvement on last week [in Cincinnati]; I’m just trying to improve with each match.”

Naomi Osaka Cruises Past Greet Minnen

Meanwhile, four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka made smooth progress, defeating Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and 24 minutes. The victory marked Osaka’s 50th hard-court Grand Slam singles win and her 10th triumph in her last 13 matches.

Despite her dominance, Osaka admitted there was room for growth: “I think, honestly, I could have had a better attitude. Like, I was just very stressed. It was the first round, and this tournament means a lot to me. I really wanted to win. I wish I thought more about the process rather than the result, but I’m glad I was able to win.”

Minnen pushed hard, breaking Osaka back at 2-2 in the first set, but the Japanese star quickly regained control. Osaka secured two more breaks to take the opener 6-3 before sealing the second set 6-4.

She now sets up a second-round clash with American Hailey Baptiste, aiming to continue her strong hard-court form at the US Open 2025.
