Ollie Pope
Ollie Pope is a right-handed, middle-order batter for England and Surrey who has developed into England’s Test vice-captain under Ben Stokes. Elegant through the covers but increasingly 360° with sweeps and reverse-sweeps, Pope also fills in as a wicket-keeper when needed. He made his Test debut against India at Lord’s in August 2018, scored a maiden Test hundred in South Africa in 2020, a double-hundred against Ireland at Lord’s in 2023, and a match-turning 196 in Hyderabad in 2024. Domestically, he plays for Surrey, London Spirit in The Hundred, and signed for Adelaide Strikers in BBL|14.
Early Life
Born in Chelsea, London, Pope attended Cranleigh School in Surrey, where he captained age-group sides and played football and hockey alongside cricket. He is the great-great-great-great-grandson of Cranleigh’s first headmaster, Joseph Merriman. He also represented Guildford and Cranleigh Cricket Clubs and made his first-XI debut at 15.
After a two-year Surrey deal in August 2016, Pope’s pathway accelerated: List A debut two days later in the Royal London Cup semi-final, first-class debut in March 2017, and a maiden first-class hundred that summer. A winter placement in Australia with Campbelltown-Camden in NSW Premier Cricket brought 994 runs and even a commendation in the NSW parliament for his on- and off-field impact.
Personal Life
Details Pope shares publicly focus on his cricketing journey and education rather than private matters. Beyond batting, he’s recognised as a superb close catcher and short-leg specialist, and has occasionally kept wicket for England when circumstances demanded (New Zealand 2019, Pakistan 2022; and again on the 2024 NZ tour due to illness/injury cover).
Domestic Career
Pope signed professionally with Surrey in 2016, made his first-class debut in March 2017, then surged in 2018 with four Championship hundreds at an average over 70 as Surrey won the County Championship. He was named PCA Young Player of the Year. In 2019 he topped Surrey’s run charts in first-class cricket with 812 runs at 101 (three hundreds in just nine innings). In 2021 he added 861 runs at 78.27, including 245 vs Leicestershire and a career-best 274 vs Glamorgan.
Short-format franchises: Pope was picked by Welsh Fire for The Hundred (2022) and moved to London Spirit in the 2024 Draft. He also signed a pre-draft deal with Adelaide Strikers for BBL|14 (2024-25).

Test Career
Debut & first ton (2018–2020). Pope debuted at Lord’s vs India in August 2018. After promising starts through 2019, he made his maiden Test hundred (135*) at Port Elizabeth in January 2020 as England beat South Africa, a breakthrough that showcased his ability to bat long in the middle order.
Injuries & return (2020–2022). A right-shoulder injury vs Pakistan in 2020 required surgery, but he returned to the Test side and, under Ben Stokes/Brendon McCullum, hit 145 vs New Zealand at Trent Bridge (2022) and 108 at Rawalpindi on England’s record-breaking day one against Pakistan.
Vice-captaincy & double-hundred (2023). Elevated to Test vice-captain in May 2023, Pope produced a dazzling 205 vs Ireland at Lord’s—the fastest Test double on English soil (200 in 207 balls). He later dislocated his shoulder in the 2023 Ashes, missing the remainder of that summer.
Bazball centerpiece & stand-in captain (2024). Pope’s 196 in Hyderabad powered a 28-run win to open the 2024 India tour and became one of the highest scores by an Englishman in India. He added 121 at Trent Bridge vs West Indies and captained England against Sri Lanka when Stokes was injured. He also donned the gloves on the 2024 NZ tour as cover.
