Colin Cowherd names a surprise quarterback to replace J.J. McCarthy as the Minnesota Vikings struggle through the 2025 NFL season. Minnesota has dropped four straight games, leaving Kevin O’Connell’s team nearly out of playoff contention. Much of the criticism targets rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who continues to struggle with rhythm and health.
Cowherd Suggests Mac Jones as Vikings’ 2026 QB Competition
Amid McCarthy’s inconsistent play and injury issues, analyst Colin Cowherd believes the Vikings should pursue Mac Jones. Jones is currently with the San Francisco 49ers and has impressed as Brock Purdy’s backup.
Cowherd shared his bold view on his YouTube podcast:
“My takeaway on this draft is, you think I’m crazy, I would go get Mac Jones,” Cowherd said on his YouTube podcast on Tuesday (1:50). “You won’t have to give up a first-round pick because you do have to pay him a little bit. But, I mean, if you’re Minnesota, you can’t go through this again. You have too good of players: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison … how long are you going to be able to keep Brian Flores (defensive coordinator) if you’re Minnesota?
“I’m watching today, and I’m like J.J. McCarthy, forget the inefficiency, he can’t stay healthy. You have to go get somebody. I would go get Mac Jones, I really would. I think to Kyle Shanahan, you’re going to have to give up probably a second-round pick, but you can keep your first.”
Cowherd argues that Minnesota’s roster is too talented to endure another disappointing season under center.
Jones’ 2025 Stats Strengthen Analyst’s Case
Mac Jones joined the 49ers in the offseason and stepped up when Brock Purdy missed time. In nine appearances this season, including eight starts, Jones has posted 2,151 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. He owns a 5–3 record as a starter.
McCarthy Still Searching for Stability
J.J. McCarthy missed his rookie year due to a knee injury and continues to struggle in 2025. He has recorded 929 passing yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions across six starts, holding a 2–4 record. His health concerns add pressure to Minnesota’s long-term quarterback decision.
Cowherd’s proposal adds fuel to the Vikings’ quarterback debate as the team approaches a crucial 2026 season.
