In Formula 1, taking pole position brings more than just grid advantage. The fastest driver also claims a unique prize — the Pirelli Pole Position Award. This miniature F1 tyre trophy has become a defining part of qualifying weekends since 2018.
How the Award Started
Pirelli came up with the concept during pre-season testing in 2018. The award made its first appearance at the Australian Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton earned the inaugural Pirelli Pole Position Award after setting the fastest lap in qualifying.
From Wind Tunnel to Trophy
Pirelli crafts the award from a scaled-down wind tunnel tyre, the same kind teams use for aerodynamic tests. The tyre measures 330mm in diameter, making it about 60% the size of a race tyre. Technicians at Pirelli’s Milan facility engrave the F1 and Pirelli logos and carve a map of the circuit on each trophy.
A Pirelli team member personally carries the tyre to every race in hand luggage. After qualifying ends, officials hand the trophy to the pole sitter during the post-session ceremony.
Where the Trophy Goes Next
After the presentation, Pirelli gives the award to the team. Teams then choose how to preserve it.
When George Russell claimed pole at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix, Mercedes displayed the tyre in its factory reception at Brackley.
Pirelli says some drivers keep the trophies at home, some send them to museums, and others auction them for charity.
More Than Just a Souvenir
This small tyre has grown into a powerful symbol of qualifying excellence. It represents a flawless lap, a decisive moment, and a team’s precision. Each award captures a piece of racing history, making it more than just a prop — it marks the moment when speed meets perfection.
