Ollie Bearman, the Haas driver, is dangerously close to receiving a race ban after accumulating multiple penalty points. With only two points remaining before reaching 12 points within a 12-month period, Bearman faces the possibility of suspension. After receiving two penalty points for a collision with Carlos Sainz during the Monza race, he is now under increased pressure.
Navigating the Penalty Point System
“Being in this situation, I have to be extra cautious moving forward,” said Bearman, acknowledging the severity of his position. The Haas driver is just two penalty points away from being banned, following the same path as his predecessor, Kevin Magnussen, who was the first to be banned due to this penalty points system.
Ollie Bearman continued, “I really need to focus on having a few clean races to move past this. It’s unfortunate to find myself here, but it’s something I must deal with.”
The penalty points system, implemented by the stewards, has created difficulties for drivers like Bearman, who feel that some penalties are harsh. Since the system’s introduction in 2014, Magnussen remains the only driver banned for accumulating points. To make matters clearer, the FIA introduced Driving Standards Guidelines this season, but their effectiveness is already being questioned.
Challenges with the Driving Standards Guidelines
“These guidelines… I feel are quite vague in some areas and quite specific in others,” Bearman explained. He expressed his frustration with the Monza penalty, where he felt unjustly penalized. “In my view, the rules regarding space on the inside are harsh, and I think many would agree with me.”
Bearman also acknowledged that finding a universally accepted solution for racing conduct is difficult. “I don’t think we’ll ever fully agree on the guidelines. Any new solution will likely come with its own set of challenges.”
Bearman’s first penalty points will expire on November 3, leaving him with just a narrow window of time to avoid any additional penalties. After that date, only two points will be cleared, and another six points will fall off by next July, giving Bearman a fragile balance until then.
