Mercedes driver George Russell has spoken about his growing role in the GPDA, his dedication to improving Formula 1 safety, and his belief in closer collaboration with the FIA. Known for voicing his opinions on key issues, Russell has become one of the most active advocates for driver welfare.

From Williams to GPDA Leader

Russell entered the GPDA in 2021 during his third F1 season with Williams, stepping in for Romain Grosjean. Following Sebastian Vettel’s retirement, he remained the only active member until Carlos Sainz joined him this year. Alongside chairman Alexander Wurz and legal representative Anastasia Fowle, Russell has been part of safety campaigns like the once-criticised halo protection system.

He says his motivation comes from personal experiences. “I’m not chasing to leave any legacy… if I see an opportunity to improve something, I want to speak about it, especially if it comes to track safety or car safety,” Russell said.

Russell recalled several incidents that left a deep impact. “In 2012 I was team-mates with Billy Monger… Seeing that crash live, and then watching Anthoine [Hubert]’s crash [at Spa 2019 in F2]… It was sickening to watch.”

“Again, Romain Grosjean’s crash [in Bahrain 2020]… I looked in my mirror, and all I could see was flames… That could have happened to anyone.”

Stronger Unity Among Drivers

Russell believes the current generation of F1 drivers is more united than before. “As a group we are probably closer and more united than ever… the changes in ’22 and the problems we all faced… It’s given the drivers topics of conversation that we want to sort of tackle together.”

Building a Productive Relationship with FIA

While Russell has previously questioned the FIA’s transparency, he says the aim is constructive cooperation. “We don’t want to fight against the FIA… You want to work together with them… You want to rise together and fall together.”

He praised recent improvements under FIA leadership. “It’s been very refreshing having Rui Marques on board as race director… They listen and they react, and I think collectively, we’re all substantially happier now with where we are.”
