In the Mexico City Grand Prix, Gabriel Bortoleto made a stellar recovery, climbing from 16th on the grid to finish 10th and secure a vital point for Sauber. Despite the challenging conditions at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the Brazilian’s persistence paid off.
“This was a good race I think,” Bortoleto said, reflecting on his efforts. “Very solid start from P16. Did a good start, overtaking a couple of cars and then on track managed to overtake Isack [Hadjar], Carlos [Sainz], Yuki [Tsunoda], so that was great. Definitely a great result and very happy for the team and me for the solid one point.”
A Memorable Overtake for the Final Point
Bortoleto’s drive to the top 10 was highlighted by an impressive overtaking move on Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar in Turn 1, a maneuver that secured the final point up for grabs in the race. Bortoleto commented, “It was a great move [on Hadjar], I think I needed to try. I tried so many times and it didn’t work, so I said ‘now, whatever happens it happens but I need to make this move happen’. It worked out very well, he fought very well trying to overtake back.”
Though Bortoleto’s performance was a bright spot, his teammate Nico Hulkenberg faced difficulties during the race weekend. After securing eighth place in the US Grand Prix, Hulkenberg’s race was cut short on Lap 25 due to a power issue.
Hulkenberg’s Disappointment After Early Retirement
“That kind of ended our race before it had really started,” Hulkenberg explained. The early retirement left Sauber behind Haas in the Teams’ Championship standings. He continued, “Obviously disappointing for us, for everyone in the team, I feel we definitely would have had some decent race pace and would have been able to fight for something but that prevented it today.”
Although Bortoleto’s point was a positive result, Hulkenberg added, “At least he [Bortoleto] scored one point which is obviously better than nothing, but tough weekend overall. Yesterday was a bit difficult as well but today, obviously, to end the race like this is a bitter pill.”
Sauber hopes to build on Bortoleto’s success and recover in the upcoming races to close the gap in the constructor standings.
