The 2025 F1 driver line-up is the most competitive the sport has ever seen, according to McLaren boss Andrea Stella, who believes this generation’s depth pushes the title fight between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to new heights. Stella notes that the current F1 2025 grid features exceptional talent across the field.
Ten drivers on the grid are already grand prix winners. Another ten have started from pole, while fifteen have climbed onto the podium. Only Yuki Tsunoda and rookies Oliver Bearman, Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto are yet to reach those milestones.
Last weekend’s Brazil Grand Prix highlighted this balance. All ten Q3 cars, spread across seven teams, sat within 0.528 seconds at Interlagos. The gaps in Q1 and Q2 were equally tight, showing how small the margins have become.
“I think what we see in this season in Formula 1, in terms of competitiveness – and this is something that you may pick for a little bit of analysis – I don’t recall that there was such a competitive pool of drivers in any other season,” Stella said.
F1 Title Fight Driven by a New Generation
Norris and Piastri continue to lead the championship race, each representing the strength of modern junior categories. Norris entered F1 after winning European F3 and finishing second in F2. Piastri arrived after securing titles in Formula Renault Eurocup, F3, and F2.
Their success shows how the feeder system now prepares drivers at a higher level than ever before.
Stella believes this progress is not limited to McLaren’s pairing. He thinks the grid holds several other drivers capable of becoming world champion.
“The new generation of drivers, they’re just so good, and now you have seven, eight drivers which are at world championship level. Like I say, I’m not sure this has happened before,” the Italian added.
Junior Series Raising the Standard of Modern F1
Stella credits the evolution of karting, data usage and structured training for shaping this new talent pool. Drivers now grow up with access to tools that once belonged only to F1 teams.
“Potentially this is because of how good the junior categories now are. These guys, they go karting and they have the data. They train at a certain level when they are adolescents. This has made the competitive field extremely, extremely tight, and therefore the difference is in this last one percent.”
The 2025 F1 season reflects this shift. Nearly every car on the grid can reach Q3, and several drivers are strong enough to fight for the title. With margins shrinking every weekend, the championship remains wide open and fiercely contested.
