Al Hilal, a Saudi Pro League club, has secured the signing of striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. The 26-year-old Uruguay international has agreed to a three-year deal, pending international clearance. Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 and spent three seasons at Anfield.
Liverpool’s official website paid tribute to Nunez’s efforts: “The 2024/25 campaign was his last with The Reds, concluding his time on Merseyside by lifting the Premier League trophy. Nunez’s two stoppage-time goals to win the match at Brentford in January were crucial and memorable moments. Everyone at the club thanks Darwin for his contributions and wishes him and his family well.”
How Nunez’s Departure Affects Liverpool and Strengthens Al Hilal
The transfer fee is reported to be £46.3 million. Liverpool recently boosted their attack by signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. During his spell at Liverpool, Nunez played 143 games and scored 40 goals.
In the title-winning 2024/25 season, Nunez started just eight Premier League matches and netted five goals. In February, Liverpool manager Arne Slot criticized Nunez’s effort, saying he “can’t accept” his work-rate. This likely led to Liverpool’s decision to let him leave.
At Al Hilal, Nunez will join a squad featuring former Premier League stars Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Kalidou Koulibaly. Last season, Al Hilal finished second in the Saudi Pro League, eight points behind Al-Ittihad.
Liverpool had turned down a January bid from Saudi club Al Nassr for Nunez. His exit might influence Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak, after Newcastle rejected a £110 million offer.
Darwin Nunez’s transfer to Al Hilal is a major step for the player. It also highlights the Saudi Pro League’s growing appeal for international stars.
