Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that FIFA might relocate 2026 World Cup matches from certain U.S. cities if safety standards fall short. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will have most of its fixtures in American venues.
Trump Emphasizes Security as a Deciding Factor
“If somebody is doing a bad job and if I feel there’s unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni, the head of FIFA, who’s phenomenal, and I would say, let’s move it to another location. And he would do that,” Trump told reporters at the White House when asked if games could be moved from Boston, one of the host cities.
“Very easily he would do it.”
Earlier in September, Trump had hinted at shifting matches during his push to tighten control over Democratic-led cities. FIFA responded at the time by stating that the final decision rests solely with the governing body.
Trump Recently Met Infantino at Gaza Ceasefire Summit
Trump made these remarks a day after a meeting with Gianni Infantino in Egypt. The gathering, which focused on a Gaza ceasefire, was attended by more than two dozen world leaders discussing paths toward peace in the region.
The former president also drew a parallel with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, suggesting a similar stance could apply.
“I could say the same thing for the Olympics,” Trump said. “If I thought LA was not going to be prepared properly, I would move it to another location.”
U.S. Cities Set to Host the Majority of Matches
Boston is scheduled to host seven matches in the tournament, while San Francisco and Seattle will host six each. Los Angeles, meanwhile, will stage eight games.
Trump has already named himself chairman of a White House task force overseeing the World Cup. His administration has previously sent National Guard troops into cities led by Democratic officials, arguing that such moves were needed to address crime and left-wing unrest.
