Tottenham’s Home Form Crisis: What’s Going Wrong?

Why Tottenham’s Home Form Is Crumbling Under Frank
Why Tottenham’s Home Form Is Crumbling Under Frank

Tottenham home form has become a growing concern as Spurs continue to struggle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under manager Thomas Frank. The pressure intensified after a heavy 4-1 defeat against Arsenal, which highlighted how quickly Spurs’ early-season promise has faded.

Spurs have now managed just one win in their past five Premier League matches. Their midweek trip to Paris saw an improved attacking display in a 5-3 loss to PSG, but it also exposed structural issues that remain unsolved.

Strong Away Record, But Nothing Clicks at Home

Tottenham oddly perform with far more freedom away from London. They sit among the top-performing away sides in the league. Yet, at home, the team looks hesitant and disconnected. Their only home league win came on the opening weekend against Burnley.

Across six home matches, Spurs have scored only seven goals. Their total of 18 shots on target is the second lowest in the league, showing how little threat they generate in their own stadium.

Creativity Gap Leaving Spurs Predictable

Frank’s midfield choices have been widely questioned due to the lack of invention in central areas. Spurs have produced just four throughballs all season. Arsenal, in contrast, have delivered 43.

Danny Murphy believes this problem stems from the midfield profile: “When you look at the make-up of their team, the midfield isn’t particularly creative,” Murphy told BBC Sport.

He also points to the faltering confidence in attack: “It feels like none of their frontline are playing with any confidence. They look a bit lightweight in the front area of the pitch.”

Murphy says Spurs’ safer approach at home is hurting them: “Away from home, that doesn’t matter as much, because they can be more pragmatic.”

The constant rotation in the final third also concerns him: “It all looks a little bit higgledy-piggledy. It means Spurs can look a bit too safe at home.”

Key Injuries Damaging Spurs’ Attacking Balance

Michael Carrick argues that the tactical issues are not limited to midfield structure: “The blame is not just on the midfield – it is a whole team thing.”

He highlights the absence of Spurs’ most creative players: “But missing Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Dominic Solanke is not going to be easy to cope with.”

Carrick believes their absence drastically reduces Tottenham’s ability to create chances and sustain pressure.

Home Crowd Anxiety Creating Nervous Performances

The atmosphere at the stadium has become tense, and the frustration from supporters is audible. Murphy feels the reaction from the stands directly affects player behaviour:

“It does have an effect. It’s a simple case of the anxiety of the crowd is transmitted on to the pitch.”

He says players begin to avoid risks: “They start playing a bit safer at home because they don’t want the moan and groan from the crowd.”

He believes only a few positive results at home can break this cycle.

Experts Expect Spurs to Recover With Time

Despite the troubling numbers, both Carrick and Murphy feel Frank will solve the home problems once stability returns.

Carrick remains patient as the new structure develops: “It’s early days. He’s trying to change a few things.”

Murphy sees long-term upside: “Although it’s concerning, overall there has been enough improvement under Frank for the fans to have hope.”

He believes the squad needs time and continuity: “It is short-term pain for long-term gain.”

Tottenham now await the return of their injured creators, hoping their home form can recover before the season drifts further off course.
