Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank has left Yves Bissouma out of the squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. The reason is repeated lateness. Spurs, fresh from winning the UEFA Europa League, will meet Champions League holders PSG in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday night. Fans can watch the match live on TNT Sports and discovery+ from 19:00 UK time.
This is Frank’s first official match in charge of Tottenham. It offers him the chance to win a trophy after ending the club’s 17-year title drought earlier this year. Bissouma, who played 44 games last season, will not be involved.
“He’s been late several times and the latest time was just one too many,” Frank said. “With everything, you need to give your players a lot of love, but there also needs to be demands and consequences. This time there was a consequence for that.”
Bissouma’s Disciplinary Issues Continue Under New Management
This is not the first time Bissouma has faced a club suspension. Last season, Ange Postecoglou dropped him from a Premier League game after a video surfaced of him inhaling laughing gas. The Mali international later apologised, calling it a “severe lack of judgement.”
Frank has used him sparingly since arriving from Brentford this summer. Bissouma started only once in pre-season — a goalless draw against Luton Town. His most recent outing was as a substitute in a 4–0 defeat to Bayern Munich.
Key Absences for Both Tottenham and PSG
Tottenham will also be without James Maddison, who has an ACL injury from a pre-season match against Newcastle in Hong Kong. PSG are missing suspended midfielder Joao Neves and injured youngster Senny Mayulu. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is excluded after the club signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Donnarumma has confirmed he will leave the French champions.
Frank told TNT Sports that PSG are “probably the best team in the world right now” but believes Spurs can compete.
“The beautiful thing in football [is] if you have two teams that are competing, there’s a good chance that you can compete in one game, and we will definitely be ready for that. I am pretty sure that we will be competitive tomorrow night in one game.”
Tottenham start their Premier League season against newly promoted Burnley at home on August 16. Champions Liverpool open the campaign against Bournemouth a day earlier.
