Swansea City have officially confirmed Vitor Matos as their new head coach on a four-year contract. The Portuguese coach arrives as the club aims to stabilise their Championship season. The Swansea City head coach announcement came after the club failed to appoint Kim Hellberg. This pushed Swansea to select Matos as the leader of their long-term rebuild.
Matos joins after a brief managerial spell with Maritimo earlier this year. He began his senior coaching career only recently but impressed Swansea with his vision. He also visited Ashton Gate on Saturday and watched Swansea fall 3-0 to Bristol City. The defeat left the club sitting in 20th place in the Championship table.
Swansea Board Backs Matos’ Long-Term Vision
The club leadership expressed strong confidence in their new coach and highlighted his long-term plans.
“We spoke to a range of candidates and Vitor was the clear stand-out with a cohesive plan of how to take our squad forward,” said Swansea chief executive Tom Gorringe.
“Vitor has spent over a decade working at elite clubs, and has been a trusted figure for some of the best coaches operating in the modern game.
“He is committed to playing an attacking brand of football, and to developing players technically and tactically, and we are sure supporters are going to enjoy watching his Swansea City team in action.”
Coaching Reshuffle Follows the Appointment
With Matos taking charge, Swansea begin restructuring their support staff. Darren O’Dea, who handled the team last weekend, and fellow coach Richard Stearman will both exit the club. Swansea confirmed they are collaborating with Matos to build a backroom group that offers the right technical and tactical support.
In their statement, the club emphasised the need for a team that “provides the support and expertise to give him the best chance of being successful”.
Club icon Leon Britton has temporarily joined the coaching setup, while Joe Allen will contribute during the transition to ensure stability inside the dressing room.
