Paris Saint-Germain began the new season in style, winning their first UEFA Super Cup after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham Hotspur in Udine. The French champions recovered from a two-goal deficit to level 2-2 in stoppage time before sealing the win from the spot. This is also the first time any French club has lifted the Super Cup.
Tottenham, guided by new boss Thomas Frank, seemed destined to lift the trophy after leading 2-0 shortly after the break. Micky van de Ven put them ahead in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero added the second just three minutes into the second half.
PSG’s Late Fightback Forces Penalties
Luis Enrique’s side staged a late rally through substitutes Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos. Lee reduced the deficit in the 85th minute with a precise low shot, while Ramos rose high to head in the equaliser in the fourth minute of added time.
The shoot-out had a rocky start for PSG when Vitinha missed their first kick, but debut goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel missed the target for Spurs. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee all converted before Nuno Mendes struck the decisive penalty.
Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro scored from the spot, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.
Marquinhos Hails Team’s Mental Resilience
“I am proud. We have hadn’t much preparation but you could see that football is not only about the physical aspect — it is also about the mental aspect, being in the right place, having the right tactics,” PSG captain Marquinhos told Canal Plus. “They sat back a lot after going 2-0 up and it is dangerous to invite PSG to come at you like that.”
PSG had only resumed training a week earlier after losing the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea last month. They will now start their Ligue 1 campaign away to Nantes on Sunday, while Spurs face Burnley at home in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
Frank gave debuts to new signings Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha, while Chevalier started in goal for PSG following his move from Lille. The 23-year-old made vital saves but was unable to stop Tottenham’s goals before PSG’s dramatic turnaround.
Bradley Barcola saw a goal ruled out for offside in the second half, but Lee’s strike and Ramos’s header ensured the match went to penalties — capping off a memorable start to PSG’s season.
