Chelsea now face a difficult stretch after Moises Caicedo’s suspension, and Enzo Maresca has openly recognised how crucial the midfielder is. Caicedo’s red card during the 1-1 draw against Arsenal rules him out of the next three fixtures, creating a major gap in the center of the pitch.
Maresca Stresses Caicedo’s Influence on Chelsea’s System
Maresca has relied heavily on Caicedo this season, starting him in 50 of 51 Premier League matches. The Chelsea manager compared Caicedo’s role to that of Cole Palmer, highlighting their equal importance.
“We are a better team with Cole, we are a better team with Moi,” said Maresca.
Even after a long trip back from South America in November, Caicedo remained vital. Maresca joked about resting him again but hinted at the reality behind his smile. “I won’t do it any more. This is the last time!”
Why Caicedo’s Absence Hurts Chelsea
Caicedo’s numbers explain why his absence matters so much. Opta data shows he leads all midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for tackles (28) and interceptions (18) this season. His tackling alone makes up 23% of Chelsea’s total, an outstanding share that few players have achieved since 2006-07.
He also wins 59% of his duels, outperforming names like Declan Rice and Ryan Gravenberch. Maresca ranks him among the world’s top defensive midfielders, placing him next to Rodri.
Andrey Santos Set to Step In
Chelsea will turn to Andrey Santos during Caicedo’s ban. The Brazilian impressed in the win over Burnley and understands the demands of the defensive midfield role.
“Andrey is ready,” Maresca told BBC Sport. “His position is playing as a six, like Moi’s position. He’s ready.”
Santos has developed through loan spells at Vasco da Gama, Nottingham Forest, and Strasbourg. Chelsea view the Strasbourg link as a long-term development route for young players.
Santos appreciates being one of the first to benefit from this pathway. “I’m so happy to have been the first one,” he told BBC Sport.
Other Midfield Options for Maresca
If Santos needs support, Maresca has alternatives. Enzo Fernandez can drop deeper, but he lacks Caicedo’s physical presence. Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo remain unavailable due to injuries.
Chelsea could temporarily shift defenders into midfield. Reece James performed brilliantly next to Caicedo against Arsenal, though Maresca expects to rest him against Leeds. Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong can also fill central roles if required.
Suspension Offers Caicedo an Unplanned but Helpful Break
Caicedo’s enforced rest might benefit him. The midfielder recently admitted he has been pushing through discomfort. “I feel pain sometimes,” he said. “But I’m not going to stop until I break. I never give up.”
BBC Sport report that Caicedo feels drained by his workload, and FifPro listed him among players dealing with an “unequal workload”. Maresca agreed that the break could help him recover. “Probably this break will give him a little bit more rest.”
Caicedo is expected to return in time for Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Atalanta next Tuesday.
