Kylian Mbappe netted the match-winning penalty as Real Madrid triumphed 1-0 over Osasuna in their La Liga opener. Head coach Xabi Alonso praised Mbappe’s leadership and his desire to inspire the team.
In his first La Liga match in charge, Alonso saw his side struggle at first before Mbappe converted a penalty in the 51st minute to break the deadlock.
Alonso Hails Mbappe’s Leadership and Desire to Inspire
Alonso praised Mbappe for his efforts to drive not only his own performance but also to lift his team-mates. “You can see that Kylian wants to do even more after this first year where he did great things,” Alonso said, as reported by AFP.
“I don’t know if it’s linked to the new number or not, or simply to his desire to win, but he wants to improve individual and collective performance and inspire his team-mates. You can see his desire every day. Today he created those decisive moments that enable us to win matches.”
Mbappe Reflects on Real Madrid’s No. 10 Legacy
Mbappe spoke about the prestigious history behind the No. 10 shirt at Real Madrid, worn by legends like Ferenc Puskas, Mesut Ozil, and Luis Figo.
“It’s special, an important number here,” Mbappe said. “I wore the No. 9, which also was. I’ve been lucky enough to have two important numbers in two seasons, but the most important thing is to play here, at the Bernabeu, for Real Madrid.”
Alonso Discusses Rodrygo’s Situation and Team’s Performance
While Alonso was happy with the win, he acknowledged areas for improvement. He also commented on the situation surrounding Rodrygo, who was an unused substitute in the match. “Rodrygo? Nothing is happening,” Alonso said. “I count on Rodrygo of course. It’s just a game. This was my decision.”
New signings Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono made their Madrid debuts in the victory. Mbappe, reflecting on the game, said, “We’re happy with the victory, but we’re aiming for more.”
