Evan Ferguson Roma debut grabbed headlines as the Irish striker impressed fans and media despite transfer market distractions. The 20-year-old striker, on loan from Brighton, showed pace, power, and link-up play in Roma’s 1-0 win over Bologna. His performance came as the Jadon Sancho transfer saga overshadowed preparations ahead of Saturday’s clash with Pisa.

Ferguson Wins Fans in Rome

Roma’s summer recruit Evan Ferguson won praise for his all-round game on his Serie A debut. The forward had three goal attempts in the opening 15 minutes and played a key role in Wesley’s winner.

He nearly provided an assist when he set up Manu Kone, who missed from close range. Roma fans gave Ferguson a warm ovation when he was replaced by Artem Dovbyk.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised his new striker for a “great game” where he showed “quality and room for improvement.”

Italian media were quick to react. Corriere dello Sport called Ferguson a potential “new idol of the Romanisti,” saying, “no centre-forward in Italy has that precision, power and vision. Maybe only Lautaro Martinez.”

Gazzetta dello Sport said Ferguson was “already flying” and had “convinced everyone on Saturday night – the fans, the critics and especially the coaching staff.”

Gasperini Calls for Transfer Reinforcements

Roma face newly-promoted Pisa on Saturday at the Arena Garibaldi. The home side is eager after a 1-1 draw with Atalanta on the opening weekend. But Roma’s build-up has been overshadowed by slow transfer dealings. Gasperini admitted he “was expecting more” signings before the Bologna game.

Roma signed Ferguson, Wesley, Neil Aynaoui, Leon Bailey, Daniele Ghilardi, and Jan Ziolkowski. However, Bailey’s injury setback leaves Gasperini short of attacking depth. The focus remains on Jadon Sancho, linked strongly with a move to Rome. With the transfer window closing Monday, time is short.

When asked about Sancho, Gasperini joked: “If you’ve got his number, give him a call! We don’t need to beg anyone, Sancho or any other players.”

He added: “It’s definitely a possibility, because these are good players who can add value to our squad, but it’s also an enormous opportunity for them. If they adopt this way of thinking, things will work out. Otherwise, you can’t put two such opposing mentalities together. If he (Sancho) understands that, it makes sense. If he doesn’t, then he will stay where he is, it’s not a problem.”

For now, Roma rely on Ferguson’s growing impact as fans wait for clarity on the Sancho saga.
