Temba Bavuma will captain South Africa in the India Test series 2025 after recovering from a calf injury. The tour starts on December 14 in Kolkata and continues with the second Test on December 22 in Guwahati. His return gives South Africa a strong boost in the World Test Championship race.
Bavuma missed the opening WTC matches after injuring his calf in England in September. He won’t feature in the upcoming white-ball games in Pakistan. Instead, he will play for South Africa A against India A in Bengaluru to regain match fitness before rejoining the main Test squad.
Bavuma Replaces Bedingham in Test Squad
Selectors made just one batting change for the India tour. They brought Bavuma back and dropped David Bedingham, who didn’t get a game in Pakistan. Bedingham has represented South Africa in 15 Tests, scoring one century and four fifties. Before his 82 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, he went 12 innings without a fifty.
With Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, and Zubayr Hamza in good form, the selectors decided to leave Bedingham out.
Proteas Stick With Trusted Bowling Attack
South Africa kept their spin trio of Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer, and Senuran Muthusamy after their strong performances in Pakistan. Maharaj returned from a groin strain during the series, while Prenelan Subrayen filled in during the first Test. The team has now left Subrayen out for the India tour.
Kagiso Rabada, Corbin Bosch, and Marco Jansen lead the pace unit. The selectors did not include Lungi Ngidi again, continuing with the same fast-bowling core from the Pakistan series.
South Africa aim to strengthen their World Test Championship campaign with this series. Along with the two Tests, they will also play three ODIs and five T20Is in India. Bavuma’s comeback sets the tone for a competitive series against a strong Indian side.
