Team India skipper Shubman Gill scripted history on Saturday by becoming the fifth player with the most centuries in World Test Championship (WTC) history. Gill scored an unbeaten 129 runs on Day 2 of the final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
The India captain’s innings came off 196 balls with 16 boundaries and two sixes. With this knock, Gill now has 2826 runs in 39 matches at an average of 43.47 in WTC. His highest score remains 269, which he achieved against England earlier this year during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025.
Gill Joins Elite WTC Century List
With 10 centuries, Gill joins a prestigious list of players with the most centuries in WTC history. This elite list includes Joe Root (21), Steve Smith (13), Kane Williamson (11), and Marnus Labuschagne (11).
Gill has also overtaken Rohit Sharma, who previously held the record for most centuries by an Indian batter in WTC with nine tons. He is now the 10th-highest run-getter in the competition. The top five run-getters are Root (6080 runs), Smith (4278), Labuschagne (4225), Ben Stokes (3616), and Travis Head (3300).
Fifth Century by an Indian Captain in a Year
Gill’s unbeaten ton is also the fifth by an Indian captain in a single calendar year. He becomes the second to achieve this feat after Virat Kohli, who did it in 2017 and 2018.
He joins a historic list of Indian batters with five or more Test centuries in a calendar year, including Sachin Tendulkar (7 in 2010), Sunil Gavaskar (5 in 1978, 1983), Rahul Dravid (5 in 2002 and 2011), Gundappa Vishwanath (5 in 1979), Virender Sehwag (5 in 2010), Kohli (5 in 2017 and 2018), and Tendulkar again (5 in 1999).
India Dominates West Indies on Day 2
India declared their innings at 518/5 in 134.2 overs in the second session, powered by centuries from Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. West Indies openers John Campbell and Tagnarine Chanderpaul started cautiously but lost Campbell at 21 after Ravindra Jadeja dismissed him.
The visitors ended at 26/1 in 11 overs, with Chanderpaul (13*) and Alick Athanaze (2*) unbeaten. India’s bowlers — Jasprit Bumrah (0/10 in 4 overs), Mohammed Siraj (0/9 in 4 overs), Jadeja (1/5 in 2 overs), and Kuldeep Yadav (0/2 in 1 over) — maintained tight control. West Indies trail by 492 runs.
