West Indies batter Shai Hope ended an eight-year drought without a Test century, scoring a brilliant hundred on Day 4 of the second and final Test match against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The right-hander reached the milestone after a patient and classy knock, marking a major comeback moment in his red-ball career.
His last Test ton came way back in 2017 against England. This 103-run knock was only his third century in Test cricket, with the previous two also coming against England in 2017.
Hope Breaks Jermaine Blackwood’s Record
Hope made history by breaking Jermaine Blackwood’s record for the most innings between two Test centuries. He took 58 innings to reach this milestone, surpassing Blackwood’s 47-innings gap.
This century also pushed Hope ahead of Richard Richardson in the list of West Indies players with the most hundreds across formats. Richardson had 21 centuries, while Hope now has 22 in 236 matches.
Hope Crosses 9,000 International Runs
With this ton, Shai Hope also completed 9,000 international runs. In 236 appearances, he has now scored 9,094 runs at an average of 38.05. His record includes 22 centuries and 41 fifties, with a highest score of 170.
Hope remains one of West Indies’ most consistent ODI performers. In 142 ODI matches, he has scored 5,879 runs at an average of 50.24, with 18 centuries and 29 fifties. He is currently the seventh-highest run-scorer in ODIs for the West Indies.
Growing T20I Impact
The West Indies star has also improved his T20I game in recent years. He has scored 1,210 runs in 51 matches at an average of 28.13 and a strike rate of 137.65. His T20I record includes one century, seven fifties, and a top score of 102*.
Shai Hope’s gritty century not only revived his Test career but also reinforced his status as one of West Indies’ most dependable batters in modern cricket.
