Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ODI future is once again under the spotlight as India gears up for the Australia series. Within a span of one year, the duo helped India claim the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy. But ever since they stepped away from Test cricket, conversations around their ODI careers have intensified with the 2027 World Cup still a few years away.
Team India Begins Transition with Shubman Gill at the Helm
The selectors have already started shaping the next phase of Indian cricket. Shubman Gill taking over as ODI captain shows a clear intent to build for the future. As Rohit and Kohli enter the twilight of their careers, their place will rely heavily on fitness, motivation, and consistency with the bat.
“It depends how hungry you are, how fit you are, whether that passion for the game is still there. With their experience, it’ll come in very handy,” Ravi Shastri said.
“I would say take it one series at a time. It’s still a long way to go,” he added.
Australia ODIs Could Decide What Lies Ahead
The upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia will be their first assignment since June. Both players have been away from competitive cricket for months, and their performance Down Under may set the tone for what comes next.
“Hopefully, if they have a good one here, that should keep them in a good state of mind, thinking of South Africa. If they’re not enjoying it, if the form is not good, they might pull the plug themselves,” Shastri said.
BCCI and Gambhir Stay Cautious on Future
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has avoided making any definitive comment on their future. Meanwhile, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla remains optimistic about their presence in the squad.
“They are great batsmen. We will succeed in defeating Australia with them in the team. It is absolutely wrong to say that this is their last ODI series. It depends on the players as to when they have to retire,” Shukla told ANI.
With Shubman Gill leading a new era, the performances of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Australia could shape their ODI journey in the coming years.
