Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for a key change in his career. According to Jadeja, Gambhir’s decision to move him from the lower order to No.6 in the batting line-up gave him a new mindset that has played a major role in his Test success in 2025.
Jadeja stood out in the recent India vs West Indies Test series, delivering match-winning performances in both Ahmedabad and Delhi. He struck an unbeaten 104 off 176 balls in the first Test on a grassy track and picked up 4/54 in the second innings, helping India record a dominant victory by an innings and 140 runs.
In the final Test in Delhi, Jadeja didn’t get a chance to bat but made a strong contribution with the ball, finishing with 3/46 and 1/102 as India wrapped up the series with a convincing seven-wicket win.
“We’ve been doing wonderful work as a team, in terms of batting and bowling. I think we know what brand of cricket we’ve been playing over the last five, six months. So that’s a good sign as a team that we continue to do it over a long period of time. As Gauti bhai (Gambhir) said, I’m at number six now,” Jadeja said during the post-match presentation.
“So I’m thinking more as a proper batsman, and that works for me. In the past, for many years, I’ve been batting at number eight, number nine, so my mindset was a little different from what I have now. I’m just trying to spend more time in the middle whenever I get a chance to bat,” he added.
A Step Away from a Rare Milestone
Jadeja is just 10 runs short of entering an exclusive 4000 runs and 300 wickets club in Test cricket. Achieving this feat would make him only the fourth cricketer to do so, following legends Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, and Daniel Vettori.
The 36-year-old is expected to have another opportunity to reach this milestone during the upcoming Test series against South Africa in November.
Jadeja Keeps Focus on Team Goals
Despite his approaching record, Jadeja insisted that personal milestones are not his priority.
“To be honest, I don’t think too much about records. I just focus on contributing with both bat and ball to help my team win. I always look forward to doing that. Feel that if I don’t perform with bat and ball, then it doesn’t reflect my value as a player. I’m always keen and give my 100 per cent. I think this is my third Man of the Series trophy, so yeah, I’m very happy to bring it back home,” he concluded.
