Ashwin Sidelined From Big Bash League 2025

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been ruled out of the Big Bash League 2025 (BBL 15) after sustaining a knee injury during training in Chennai. The veteran was preparing for his debut with the Sydney Thunder, aiming to become the first Indian men’s cricketer to play in Australia’s premier T20 tournament.

“While training in Chennai to prepare for the upcoming season, I hurt my knee. I’ve had a procedure, and the outcome means I will miss BBL. That is tough to say. I was genuinely excited to be part of this group and play in front of you,” Ashwin said in his statement.

The 39-year-old revealed that he underwent a minor procedure and will now focus on recovery.

“For now, it is rehab, recovery, and doing the work to come back stronger. From my first chat with the club, I have felt only warmth from Trent, the staff, the players, and so many of you who have already reached out. Thank you for making me feel at home before a ball has been bowled,” he added.

Ashwin’s Overseas Dream on Hold

Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in December 2024 and ended his IPL career earlier this year, was ready to begin a new phase in global T20 leagues. After going unsold in the ILT20 auction, he committed to playing the entire season for the Thunder. His participation was facilitated by the end of his BCCI contract, which previously prevented Indian players from competing in overseas T20 tournaments.

Ashwin’s Message to Fans

Despite his setback, the off-spinner assured supporters that he will be cheering for the Thunder.

“I will be watching every game and cheering for both our women’s and men’s teams. If rehab and travel line up, and only if the doctors are happy, I would love to be around later in the season and say hello in person. No promises. That is the intent.”

He continued, “Please keep packing ENGIE Stadium and keep the noise up. Your support matters more than you know. Thank you for the love. Wishing both Thunder teams a big year.”

Misses Hong Kong Sixes Appearance

The knee injury also rules Ashwin out of the Hong Kong Sixes, where he was set to represent India. Former batter Robin Uthappa has been named as his replacement.

“I’m really disappointed to miss out on the Hong Kong Sixes this year due to injury. I was looking forward to experiencing the tournament’s unique format and energy. I wish the Indian team all the very best. I’m sure the boys will put on a great show and hopefully lift the trophy,” Ashwin stated.

A Remarkable Career

Across formats, Ashwin claimed 765 international wickets in 287 appearances for India, becoming one of the most prolific spinners in cricket history. In the IPL, he featured in 221 matches for Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals—winning titles with CSK in 2010 and 2011.

Although his much-anticipated BBL debut is on hold, Ashwin’s legacy as a world-class spinner continues to inspire fans and players worldwide.
