Cricket Australia confirmed that Steve Smith will captain the side in Cummins’ absence. The 32-year-old pacer will miss the first Test in Perth, which begins on November 21. However, he remains determined to regain full fitness before the second Test at the Gabba, starting December 4.

During a recent training session, Cummins completed a short run-up and bowled at a gentle pace. The signs were positive and hinted that the skipper is progressing faster than expected. His return to partial bowling has given Australian fans new hope ahead of the Ashes.

Cummins’ absence will still be felt deeply. In the 2023 Ashes series in England, he finished as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets at an average of 37.72.
