Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has begun taking confident steps toward his bowling comeback, raising optimism about his return during the Ashes 2025 series. As reported by Fox Cricket, the pace ace has started light training while recovering from a lumbar bone stress injury that ruled him out of action.

Cricket Australia confirmed that Steve Smith will captain the side in Cummins’ absence. The 32-year-old pacer will miss the first Test in Perth, which begins on November 21. However, he remains determined to regain full fitness before the second Test at the Gabba, starting December 4.

During a recent training session, Cummins completed a short run-up and bowled at a gentle pace. The signs were positive and hinted that the skipper is progressing faster than expected. His return to partial bowling has given Australian fans new hope ahead of the Ashes.

Fox Cricket stated, “Cummins has taken the first fundamental steps towards his bowling comeback,” emphasizing the captain’s determination and steady progress.

While Cummins continues rehab, Scott Boland is likely to feature in the playing XI for the opening Test. Meanwhile, Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, Xavier Bartlett, and Fergus O’Neill are being considered for squad inclusion to strengthen Australia’s pace unit.

Cummins’ absence will still be felt deeply. In the 2023 Ashes series in England, he finished as the fourth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets at an average of 37.72. His best figures were 6/91, and he also played several crucial innings with the bat, showing his value as a leader and all-rounder.

Ashes 2025 Series Schedule

First Test: Perth Stadium, November 21–25

Second Test: Gabba, December 4–8

Third Test: Adelaide Oval, December 17–21

Fourth Test: MCG, December 26–30

Fifth Test: SCG, January 4–8

The Ashes 2025 will test Australia’s depth and leadership under Steve Smith. However, Cummins’ potential return by the Gabba Test could give the team a major boost. His fitness and form will remain a top priority as Australia aims to reclaim the Ashes on home soil.
