Devajit Saikia Hails Reforms in Women’s Cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has lauded Jay Shah for introducing major reforms that reshaped women’s cricket in India. Saikia underlined Shah’s efforts behind the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the implementation of equal pay, the introduction of annual player contracts, and the expansion of domestic tournaments for women cricketers.

Currently serving as ICC President, Jay Shah’s term as BCCI Secretary from 2019 to 2024 was instrumental in driving these reforms. During his leadership, the board took bold steps such as ensuring pay parity, initiating professional contracts, and investing heavily in grassroots and visibility programs that encouraged more women to pursue the sport seriously.

“It was during 2022-23 when Jay Shah was the secretary for the second time. He initiated all these things. These are all his brainchildren, whether it is WPL or pay parity, bringing the girls under the Annual contract system, or expanding the scope of domestic cricket for women. And not only that, the recent increase in the prize money just about one month before the Women’s World Cup. So there was a huge increase in the prize money, about 300 times. So all these things have worked, and I am sure this has really done wonders for the women, and during a very short period of time, with these positive steps, the results are for everyone to see now,” Devajit Saikia told ANI.

Transformative Era Under Jay Shah’s Leadership

Under Jay Shah’s guidance, Indian women’s cricket underwent a profound evolution, transitioning from a developing segment into a world-class competitive sport. His tenure was marked by bold decisions that improved both player welfare and the overall ecosystem of women’s cricket.

The launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023 proved to be a landmark initiative. Modeled on the success of the IPL, the WPL built a sustainable and marketable platform for women athletes, giving them opportunities for growth, financial security, and greater visibility.

Saikia further praised the Indian women’s team for their remarkable World Cup triumph, acknowledging their determination and performance on the global stage.

“They deserve it (love from people and WC), and because of their hard work, they have achieved what is right for them, and I’m sure they will go higher and higher in the coming times. And this is good for Indian women’s cricket also,” he added.

India’s First-Ever Women’s World Cup Glory

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India clinched their maiden Women’s World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium last Sunday. The historic win not only signaled the rise of Indian women’s cricket but also validated Jay Shah’s reform-driven approach that continues to uplift the game across all levels.
