The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Shreyas Iyer suffered a laceration injury to the spleen during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. He is medically stable and under close medical supervision.
The injury happened when Iyer sprinted in from backward point to complete a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. While landing, he hit the ground hard on his left lower rib cage. He clutched his ribs in pain as the medical staff rushed in and took him off the field. Soon after, he went to the hospital for detailed scans.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” said a statement from BCCI.
The board added that Iyer is responding well to treatment.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the statement added.
Iyer’s Strong Form Before the Injury
Iyer has been in excellent touch with the bat in 2025. In the Australia series, he scored 72 runs in two innings, including a 77-ball 61 in Adelaide. This year, he has scored 496 runs in 11 matches with five fifties and an average of 49.60.
He also played a key role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. He scored 243 runs in five innings, finishing as the team’s top scorer. In his ODI career, Iyer has 2,917 runs in 73 matches at an average of 47.81, with five centuries and 23 fifties.
Recovery Underway, South Africa Series Uncertain
Iyer’s parents will travel to Australia to be with him. Doctors will monitor him daily before deciding on his return. His availability for the South Africa ODI series, starting November 30, remains uncertain. His recovery in the next few weeks will decide his participation.
Team India will hope for a quick return for the middle-order batter, who plays a crucial role alongside KL Rahul and Axar Patel.
