The India Pakistan Asia Cup Trophy row grows fiercer weeks after India’s intense final win over Pakistan. The Asia Cup Trophy remains inside the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) headquarters in Dubai. Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, has issued strict orders to keep it locked until he personally authorizes the handover.
Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, carried the trophy off the stage himself. This happened after India declined to accept it from him during the September 28 post-match ceremony. Tensions between India and Pakistan were already high following the terror attack in Pahalgam, and the Asia Cup final only deepened the rift between the two sides.
Trophy Locked in Dubai Headquarters
“As of today, the trophy is still in ACC offices in Dubai with clear instructions from Naqvi that it should not be moved or handed over to anyone without his approval and in-person presence,” a source close to Naqvi told PTI.
The source also revealed, “Naqvi has given clear instructions that only he will hand over the trophy in person (whenever that happens) to the Indian team or BCCI.”
The India Pakistan Asia Cup Trophy dispute has further strained cricketing relations. During the tournament, Indian players avoided handshakes with Pakistani players, and political gestures on the field sharpened the divide.
BCCI Prepares for ICC Confrontation
Naqvi intensified the tension with politically charged posts on social media. The BCCI strongly objected to both his remarks and his decision to remove the trophy without letting any Indian official receive it.
BCCI now plans to raise the issue at the upcoming ICC board meeting. The board will likely push for a formal censure and may also demand his removal as an ICC Director.
The Asia Cup Trophy controversy shows how diplomatic strain between India and Pakistan continues to overshadow sporting triumphs. What should have been a celebration has turned into another flashpoint between the two cricketing giants.
