Lando Norris’ fight for the 2025 F1 title has taken a twist after he and Oscar Piastri were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. The incident reduced his championship lead and brought Max Verstappen level with Piastri on 366 points. The Lando Norris title scenarios now focus on Qatar, where the Briton can still close out the championship.
Norris had second place taken away due to the infringement. That cost him 18 points and cut his advantage to 24 instead of the possible 30.
A Reduced Lead, But Norris Still Controls the Fight
Two races and one Sprint remain, giving a total of 58 points. Norris only needs to finish the Qatar weekend with a 26-point margin over both Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen to seal his first world title.
He knew earlier that Las Vegas would not be the decider. “When Norris won the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, he knew he could not wrap the title up in Las Vegas but would have to wait for Qatar.”
Sprint Points Alone Cannot Seal the Championship
Norris cannot secure the title on Saturday. Even a perfect Sprint, worth eight points, won’t be enough to end the battle.
If he wins the Sprint and both rivals fail to score, his edge rises to 32. But 50 points remain from the two Grands Prix. The main race will decide everything.
If Norris outscores both challengers by two points over the entire weekend, the title becomes his with a race to spare.
Qatar Grand Prix Is the First Real Chance
A strong result on Sunday could give him an early celebration. If Norris wins the Qatar Grand Prix and finishes at least one point ahead of both rivals, he becomes champion immediately. The win tally at that stage would read:
- Norris: 8
- Piastri: 7
- Verstappen: 6
With those numbers, no one could overturn him on countback.
The rule is clear: “the championship would be his.”
Understanding the Countback Situations
If Norris increases his gap over Piastri by only one point and does not win in Qatar, the fight stays open. Piastri could still take the crown by winning in Abu Dhabi if Norris scores nothing.
Similarly, Verstappen can remain in contention if he wins in Qatar while Norris finishes close behind. A Verstappen victory in Abu Dhabi could then tie them on points, giving the title to Verstappen due to more wins.
Will the Fight End in Qatar or Abu Dhabi?
Qatar offers Norris his first chance to secure the world championship. If he misses it, Abu Dhabi will decide everything. The DSQ tightened the standings but did not weaken Norris’ overall position.
The next weekend now carries the weight of the entire season. One mistake could drag the title fight into the finale.
