Australia’s Test squad assessed the Optus Stadium pitch for the upcoming Ashes Test against England on Monday. The surface showed a strong green shade, and the team began early preparations for the series opener in Perth.
Stand-in captain Steve Smith and wicketkeeper Alex Carey spent time examining the wicket soon after arrival. Smith steps in for Pat Cummins, who continues his recovery from a lumbar stress injury sustained in September.
Green Surface Expected to Change Before Match Day
The pitch currently carries an even layer of grass. However, Perth’s rising temperatures, likely above 30°C through the week, may cause it to dry out quickly. The conditions could shift towards traditional pace and bounce by Friday.
Former captain Greg Chappell described what Australia should expect at Optus Stadium in his column for The Sydney Morning Herald. He wrote that the venue has a surface that “boasts a reputation built on sheer pace and bounce”.
He further added, “The strip here is pure energy, where the ball flies with a velocity unmatched anywhere else.”
Australia will hope for a stronger performance than their previous Test at this venue. They endured a heavy 295-run loss to India last year when the batting lineup collapsed, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli struck dominant centuries.
Australia Begin Prep; England Aim to Break Long Losing Streak
Australia will hold their first full training session on Monday afternoon after landing in Perth on Sunday. England, meanwhile, received a day off following their practice match at Lilac Hill.
