Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur Endures Another Tough Loss at ATP Finals faced more disappointment at the ATP Finals, falling short once again against a top-ranked opponent. Despite holding a strong position at 3-1, 40-30 in the deciding set, the world No.7 couldn’t hold on as Lorenzo Musetti mounted a comeback to win 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. The loss marks De Minaur’s 16th straight defeat against a top 10 player in a singles event.
Speaking after the match, De Minaur was candid about his ongoing struggles. “If I really want to be serious about taking the next step in my career, these matches, I can’t lose them. I just can’t,” he said.
Mental Fatigue Taking Its Toll
De Minaur admitted that his repeated failures to close out matches against elite players are beginning to wear him down mentally.
“I mean, it feels like I’ve lost a lot of them this year. More than anything, it’s getting to a point where mentally it’s killing me,” he shared.
“I just (need to) win these matches. It’s something that if it doesn’t get sorted, it’s going to eat me alive. I need to get it sorted sooner rather than later. I don’t know how many times I can deal with a loss like this one.”
The 26-year-old, who leads the ATP Tour with 42 hardcourt wins this season, has fallen short against several of the sport’s best, including Alexander Zverev, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev, and now Musetti.
A Strong Season Overshadowed by Big-Match Struggles
While De Minaur continues to battle against the top tier, his 2025 season overall has been impressive. He has appeared in two Grand Slam quarter-finals, captured the Citi Open title in Washington, and compiled a 55-23 win-loss record.
Reflecting on the year, he said, “It feels like it’s been that type of year where I’ve had what feels like a whole lot of matches that should have gone my way and just somehow don’t. I don’t feel great.”
Chance for Redemption Against Fritz
De Minaur will have another opportunity to end his drought against top 10 opposition when he meets Taylor Fritz on Thursday. Their head-to-head currently stands even at 5-5, though Fritz has taken their last two encounters, including a win at last year’s ATP Finals.
A victory over Fritz would not only end De Minaur’s painful streak but also help him regain confidence heading into the new season.
