Rob Edwards Steps Aside Amid Wolves Manager Talks

Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards has stepped down before the Birmingham City game as Wolves move to hire him as their next manager. The club confirmed that Edwards will not be on the sidelines for Saturday’s Championship clash. His absence follows growing talks about his possible switch to the Premier League side.

Wolves are looking for a new head coach after sacking Vitor Pereira following a 10-match winless streak. The team sits at the bottom of the Premier League table. The club’s board now sees Rob Edwards as the top choice to replace Pereira.

Edwards Holds Talks With Middlesbrough Board

Middlesbrough rejected Wolves’ request to speak with Edwards on Thursday. However, the manager met club officials the next day to discuss his future. He skipped his usual pre-match press conference and missed the team’s final training session before facing Birmingham.

The 41-year-old, who replaced Michael Carrick in June, signed a three-year deal earlier this year. Under his leadership, Middlesbrough sit third in the Championship, showing solid form this season.

Wolves Eye a Familiar Face

After parting ways with Pereira, Wolves shortlisted several names, but Edwards quickly emerged as the favorite. The former defender played more than 100 games for Wolves between 2004 and 2008. He later joined the club’s coaching team and briefly served as interim manager in 2016 after Walter Zenga’s departure.

“MS has told us that he will be available for the next season,” Cricbuzz quoted Kasi Viswanathan as saying.

According to BBC Sport, Edwards remains one of the main contenders for the job. Former manager Gary O’Neil withdrew from the race earlier this week. Edwards’ deep ties with the club and his Championship success make him the front-runner for the Wolves role.

The coming days will reveal whether Middlesbrough allow Wolves to begin official talks with their current manager.
