The Supreme Court of India has sent a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government. The action follows a petition filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. Her plea contests the Calcutta High Court’s previous order regarding alimony payments. The earlier ruling granted her ₹1.5 lakh per month and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter. Jahan argues that the maintenance amount is insufficient based on Shami’s income and standard of living.
Supreme Court Seeks Replies in Four Weeks
Acting on the petition, the apex court directed both Shami and the West Bengal government to submit their responses within four weeks. The case will be listed for a detailed hearing once the replies are received.
In her submission, Jahan stated that the existing amount fails to ensure her daughter’s rightful standard of living. “The daughter has the right to interact with the children of his peers, study in similar schools, and live with dignity,” her plea mentioned.
A Long-Running Legal and Personal Battle
The conflict between Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan dates back to 2018, when Jahan accused the cricketer of domestic violence and dowry harassment. A criminal case was filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. Although the BCCI cleared Shami of all match-fixing allegations, the personal and legal disputes between the couple have persisted for years.
When asked in an interview whether he regrets his marriage, Shami responded, “Leave that. I never regret the past. What’s gone is gone. I don’t want to blame anyone, including myself. Want to focus on my cricket. I don’t need these controversies.”
He further addressed the scrutiny faced by cricketers’ personal lives, saying, “That’s your job to investigate. Why do you want to hang us to death? Look at the other side as well. I focus on cricket, not controversies.”
With the Supreme Court now involved, the case is set to enter a crucial phase, potentially redefining the maintenance structure decided earlier by the High Court.
