Australian driver Jack Doohan is reportedly closing in on a deal to join Toyota’s Super Formula program in 2026, potentially while taking on a Formula 1 reserve role outside Alpine. The move follows Alpine’s decision to promote Franco Colapinto earlier this season, leaving Doohan to reassess his career path.

Reports suggest that Kondo Racing, a Toyota-affiliated team, is the frontrunner to sign the 22-year-old for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Alpine appears set to continue with Colapinto in their reserve ranks for 2026.

Doohan’s father, Mick Doohan, a five-time MotoGP world champion, has been actively engaged in discussions with Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, whose outfit shares a close association with Toyota. Mick’s recent appearance at the Motegi SUPER GT finale further hinted that Japan could become Jack’s next competitive base.

When asked about Toyota’s interest in the young Australian, Toyota global motorsport director Masaya Kaji remained reserved but complimentary:

“There’s nothing concrete I can say now, but he is a good driver,” said Kaji.

Toyota’s Driver Shake-Up for 2026 Super Formula

Jack Doohan’s potential signing comes amid a broader driver reshuffle within Toyota’s Super Formula roster. Toyota recently confirmed that two-time World Rally champion Kalle Rovanpera will move to KCMG. He replaces Nirei Fukuzumi, who is set to join Rookie Racing after Kazuya Oshima’s retirement.

The addition of Doohan could also impact Zak O’Sullivan, who currently represents Kondo Racing. O’Sullivan, who has secured points twice this year and achieved a best finish of seventh at Sugo, has expressed interest in staying for another season. However, Doohan’s entry may put that continuity at risk.

Impul and TGM Grand Prix Also Eyeing New Talent

Elsewhere, Team Impul looks set for an overhaul. Oliver Rasmussen is not expected to continue after struggling for results post-injury. Meanwhile, Mitsunori Takaboshi has yet to score points, putting his seat in jeopardy. Sources indicate that the team may turn to international recruits to revive its form.

Rising Super Formula Lights contender Rikuto Kobayashi is also tipped for a promotion to TGM Grand Prix after substituting for Rasmussen at Motegi earlier in the year. The team’s current drivers, Kazuto Kotaka and Seita Nonaka, are reportedly set to part ways with the outfit.

A Strategic Move for Doohan’s Career

If confirmed, Jack Doohan’s move to Toyota’s Super Formula project would offer a valuable platform to sharpen his racing craft while remaining in Formula 1’s orbit. Competing in Japan’s premier single-seater championship could strengthen his profile and open doors to a potential F1 reserve role with Haas or other Toyota-linked teams in the near future.
