Former India coach Greg Chappell has stirred fresh controversy over BCCI’s dominance in world cricket, echoing Chris Broad’s recent accusations that Indian officials have historically influenced cricketing outcomes for their benefit.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Chappell revealed that former BCCI and ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya had allegedly offered to “reduce Sourav Ganguly’s suspension” at the start of his coaching stint in 2005.
“Dalmiya offered to have his suspension reduced so that he could go to Sri Lanka at the start of my tenure,” Chappell said. “I said no, I don’t want to rot the system; he has to do his time. Dalmiya seemed okay for him to miss.”
The discussion, according to Chappell, took place just before India’s tri-series in Sri Lanka in 2005. That series also marked the beginning of a tense phase in Indian cricket — one that eventually led to Ganguly’s removal from the side and an infamous fallout between the captain and the Australian coach.
Chris Broad’s Explosive Interview Rekindles the BCCI Power Debate
Chappell’s revelation follows Chris Broad’s bombshell interview with The Telegraph (London), where the former England cricketer recounted a disturbing instance of outside influence in match decisions.
“I got a phone call saying, ‘be lenient, find some time because it’s India.’ So we had to find time and bring it down below the threshold,” Broad said. “The next game, it happened again — and I was told, ‘just do him.’ There were politics involved right from the start.”
Broad’s account implies that even the disciplinary process in international cricket may have been compromised by political and financial interests. His remarks have reignited a global discussion about the extent of BCCI’s power within the ICC.
“India got all the money and have now taken over the ICC,” Broad stated. “It’s a much more political position now than it ever has been.”
Renewed Scrutiny Over BCCI’s Global Clout
With both Chappell and Broad speaking out, concerns over BCCI’s growing control in cricket governance have once again surfaced. Their statements suggest that India’s financial influence has not only shaped administrative decisions but also affected the sport’s judicial integrity.
The controversy has reawakened questions about fairness, transparency, and whether world cricket can maintain independence while remaining financially dependent on India’s cricketing empire.
