Tyler Herro Ankle Surgery Timeline Puts Miami Heat Star Out

Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro had surgery on his left ankle and foot, sidelining the team’s leading returning scorer as training camp approaches.

The Heat revealed that the 90-minute operation addressed posterior impingement syndrome in the ankle. It was performed by Dr. Thomas San Giovanni, with Heat doctors Dr. Harlan Selesnick and Dr. Frantz Lerebours assisting at Doctors Hospital Surgery Center in Miami.

“Herro is expected to be out for eight weeks, though a more exact return-to-play plan likely won’t be finalized until he begins rehabilitation and gets through the surgery.”

Timeline and Early Season Impact

Training camp for Miami begins on September 30, with the season opener on October 22 at Orlando. If the recovery timeline holds, Herro may not return until mid-November. That would keep him out for close to 16 games.

The injury developed during offseason workouts and worsened in recent weeks, making surgery the best option.

Breakout Year for Herro

Herro is coming off his strongest NBA season. He averaged 23.9 points per game, an increase of more than three points from his earlier best. He also set career-high marks in shooting accuracy (.472), three-pointers made per game (3.3), and assists (5.5).

In addition, he played a career-high 77 games, earned his first All-Star nod, and captured the 3-point contest title at All-Star weekend. He also produced three 40-point performances after having only one such outing in his first five years.

Injury History and Contract Situation

Foot and ankle problems have followed Herro throughout his career. He missed 15 or more games in each of his first four seasons, plus 40 games in the 2023-24 campaign.

The 24-year-old will earn $31 million this year, the third of a four-year, $120 million contract. He is extension-eligible next month and could land a three-year deal worth nearly $150 million. If talks wait until next summer, he may qualify for a four-year extension exceeding $200 million.
