Carlos Alcaraz defeated 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday to secure his place in the US Open 2025 final. The Spaniard won 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 to clinch his 36th victory in his last 37 matches. His only recent defeat came to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz is now targeting his sixth Grand Slam and second US Open title after first lifting the trophy in 2022. He will face either top-ranked Jannik Sinner or Canadian 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in Sunday’s final.
“It’s a great feeling. Once again in the final here in the US Open, it feels amazing. It means lot to me,” said Alcaraz.
“It wasn’t the best level of the tournament for me, but I just keep a good level from the beginning to the last point. I served really well today, it was important.”
Djokovic Struggles to Find Rhythm
The loss marked Djokovic’s fourth straight Grand Slam semi-final exit and ended his bid to become the oldest major champion at 38. Alcaraz capitalized early, breaking the Serbian in the opening game and holding serve with authority to claim the first set.
Djokovic rallied in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead. However, Alcaraz struck back with a stunning passing shot to level at 3-3. Despite missed chances, the Spaniard dominated the tie-break, moving ahead two sets to love.
Alcaraz sealed the set after Djokovic sent a looping backhand return wide. The Serbian called for the trainer between sets, but his energy visibly dropped.
Alcaraz Dominates the Decider
Two double faults from Djokovic handed Alcaraz a break for a 3-1 lead in the third set. From there, the Spaniard never looked back, closing out the match with aggressive serving and pinpoint groundstrokes.
Djokovic’s hopes of securing a record 25th Grand Slam title ended with a subdued finish as Alcaraz booked his place in another New York final.
