Jannik Sinner produced another near-flawless performance at the US Open 2025, beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first all-Italian men’s quarter-final at a Grand Slam. With this win, Sinner became the second-youngest man in the Open Era to reach the semi-finals of all four majors in a single season, behind Rafael Nadal in 2008.
“We know each other very well,” Sinner said of Musetti. “We’re from the same country. We have so many Italian players every time in the draw. I know here, there are many Italians, so it’s nice to play here. Obviously playing Davis Cup together and stuff like this, we have to take the friendship away for the match and then obviously when we shake hands, everything is fine. From my point of view, it was a great performance, very solid. Especially starting very, very well in the match.”
Sinner Extends Hard-Court Winning Streak
The defending champion extended his winning streak at hard-court majors to 26 matches, tying Novak Djokovic and Ivan Lendl for the third-longest men’s run. Sinner, winner of the past three hard-court majors, now targets Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals.
Auger-Aliassime holds a slight Lexus ATP Head2Head edge of 2-1, though Sinner crushed him last month in Cincinnati, dropping just two games. Both of Auger-Aliassime’s wins over Sinner came in 2022.
Sinner dominated against Musetti, winning 91 per cent of first-serve points and never allowing his opponent to convert seven break chances. Musetti won only 18 of 75 return points.
Records and Milestones for the Italian Star
One win shy of 300 career match victories, Sinner holds a 36-4 season record. At 24 years and 18 days, he also became the youngest man to record 25 major wins in a single season, surpassing Mats Wilander in 1988.
The Italian is chasing his fifth Grand Slam crown and second at the US Open. Victory in New York would give him four major titles in his past five appearances. His only miss came at Roland Garros 2025, where he let slip three championship points in a thrilling final against Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner and Alcaraz have split the last seven majors and could extend the streak to eight. Sinner, already the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion this year, sits second in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, just behind Alcaraz.
