Sabalenka Beats Bucsa to Reach US Open 2025 Quarterfinals

Aryna Sabalenka continued her strong run at the US Open 2025, defeating Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals in New York. The defending champion dominated on Louis Armstrong Stadium, not facing a single break point during her one-hour and 13-minute victory.

Sabalenka, who won her first US Open singles title in 2024 by beating Jessica Pegula, has yet to drop a set this year. The world number one is aiming to become the first player since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the US Open women’s singles title.

Sabalenka Focused on New Goals

The 27-year-old Belarusian dismissed suggestions that last year’s triumph is motivating her campaign. “I’m not playing not to lose, I play to win,” Sabalenka said. “I don’t care about what happened last year. I mean, of course it’s a big achievement, and I’m super happy I was able to achieve it once, but the goal is to do it many more times.”

She added: “My mentality is going out there every time with the best fighting spirit and just fight for my dream.”

Sabalenka broke Bucsa twice to seal the first set in just 27 minutes. A decisive break in the fifth game of the second set ensured her progress. “I’m super happy with the win. I feel with every game I play, I play better and better and better,” the three-time major champion added.

Vondrousova Sets Up Quarterfinal Clash

Sabalenka will face Marketa Vondrousova in the last eight after the Czech overcame Elena Rybakina 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. The 2023 Wimbledon champion impressed with 13 aces and consistent baseline play to beat the ninth seed.

“After everything I have been through, it is amazing to be standing here again,” Vondrousova said. “It’s a long way to go, but it’s been an amazing week so far. I’m incredibly happy to be here.”

Vondrousova, ranked 60th, is into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal since the 2023 French Open after recovering from shoulder surgery last year.
