Jose Mourinho has officially left Fenerbahce after the Turkish giants failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The decision followed their 1-0 aggregate loss to Benfica, which pushed them into the UEFA Europa League. Mourinho spent 15 months in charge of the club before parting ways.
Mourinho joined Fenerbahce in 2024 and guided the Super Lig side to a second-place finish last season. That result earned them a Champions League spot. However, defeat against Benfica — the club where Mourinho began his managerial career in 2000 — sealed his fate.
In a statement on their Turkish X account, the club confirmed his exit and thanked him for his work. Last season, Fenerbahce were also knocked out in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals. They suffered another setback when Rangers eliminated them in the Europa League round of 16.
Mourinho’s Fenerbahce Tenure and European Struggles
The Portuguese coach moved to Turkey after three years with AS Roma. There, he lifted the UEFA Conference League in 2022. His time with Fenerbahce, however, did not bring trophies. Fans hoped for a deeper European run, but the team struggled both in the Europa League and Champions League.
Mourinho’s departure adds him to the growing list of high-profile coaches leaving Turkey. On the same day, Besiktas dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their own European exit.
Linked With Nottingham Forest and Premier League Return
The 62-year-old coach is already linked with another challenge. Reports suggest Nottingham Forest could move for him. Current manager Nuno Espirito Santo admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had “changed.” That situation has opened the door for Mourinho’s return to England.
Mourinho is well-known in the Premier League. His first Chelsea stint between 2004 and 2007 made him one of the top managers in the world. He later won the Champions League with Inter Milan, La Liga with Real Madrid, another Premier League with Chelsea, and the Europa League with Manchester United.
His trophy cabinet also includes two Serie A titles, two Europa League wins, the UEFA Conference League, and several domestic cups. Mourinho remains one of the most decorated managers in football. His next destination is uncertain, but his track record ensures he will remain in demand.
