Tottenham Hotspur made a strong statement in the Premier League 2025 opener by defeating Burnley 3-0 at home. New manager Thomas Frank enjoyed the perfect start to his tenure as Richarlison and Brennan Johnson secured all three points. Manchester City and Sunderland also celebrated comfortable wins in their first fixtures of the season.
Spurs shine under new boss Frank
Thomas Frank’s reign at Tottenham began in style as his team dominated Burnley. Richarlison netted twice, first converting a cross from Mohammed Kudus before finishing a stunning bicycle kick from another Kudus delivery. Brennan Johnson, who scored in the Europa League final last season, added the third to seal the win.
“Perfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important,” Frank said.
Haaland and Reijnders power City past Wolves
Manchester City cruised to a 4-0 win over Wolves with Erling Haaland scoring twice. However, it was new signing Tijjani Reijnders who stole attention by creating and scoring in his league debut.
“We knew he is a top signing for the coming years for City,” Pep Guardiola said of Reijnders after his move from AC Milan.
Rayan Cherki, another summer addition, completed the scoring as City began their campaign with fresh energy.
Sunderland stun West Ham on Premier League return
Sunderland marked their return to the top flight after eight years with a stunning 3-0 win against West Ham. Eliezer Mayenda opened the scoring, Dan Ballard doubled the lead, and Wilson Isidor added a late third. The victory highlighted the impact of their promotion-winning players, despite several high-profile summer arrivals.
Newcastle and Fulham held in close contests
Newcastle were held to a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa, despite playing against 10 men for the last 24 minutes. The absence of Alexander Isak, who is linked with Liverpool, overshadowed their attack. Eddie Howe urged for a quick conclusion to the transfer saga.
“From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It’s taking away the focus of the players and the supporters,” Howe said.
Elsewhere, Fulham salvaged a late 1-1 draw at Brighton as Rodrigo Muniz scored in stoppage time after Matt O’Riley’s penalty.
Liverpool started their title defence with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday, while Arsenal visit Manchester United on Sunday.
