World No.1 Jannik Sinner defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the Cincinnati Open 2025 quarter-finals. The Italian set the tone with an early break in the third game. Mannarino, ranked 89, saved a break point with an ace in game seven. Sinner still wrapped up the opening set.
Rain Delay, Same Outcome
Rain stopped play with Sinner serving at 40-30 and trailing 2-1 in the second set. After a two-hour, 45-minute pause, the French left-hander dug in. At 5-5 he saved three break points. On the fourth, he netted a backhand, giving Sinner a 6-5 lead.
Serving for the match, Sinner led 30-0. Mannarino struck back, earning his first break point and converting with a fierce forehand return. Sinner reset in the tie-break, firing back-to-back aces and sealing it 7-4. He is now 4-0 against Mannarino.
“He’s a tough opponent,” said Sinner. “Very different to all the other opponents. Not only because he is a leftie but also how he hits the ball – it’s very low. I struggled a bit to close it out but this can happen in this sport and I’m very happy to be in the next round.”
Zverev Finishes Job; Rune Advances
Alexander Zverev needed one game to complete his suspended match with Brandon Nakashima. He closed a 6-4, 6-4 win and will face Karen Khachanov in the fourth round.
Holger Rune moved through after Frances Tiafoe retired with a back issue. The Dane led 6-4, 3-1 when the American stopped.
Swiatek, Linette progress in Women’s Draw
Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek beat Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 despite 33 unforced errors. She finished before the rain delay.
“I wanted to be more solid than in my last match,” Swiatek said. “I’m happy with the level of my focus and the consistency. It was a good match for sure. Not easy conditions as well – super humid – so I’m happy that I didn’t let this affect me.”
Magda Linette upset fourth seed Jessica Pegula 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 after their match resumed from Tuesday.
