French qualifier Terence Atmane has recorded the biggest win of his career at the 2025 Cincinnati Open, overcoming world No. 4 Taylor Fritz in the fourth round. The 23-year-old fought back from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and secure a place in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.
“I couldn’t believe it to be honest. I saw I was hitting the volley with the frame. At that moment I was like, ‘No!’ I was about to go back to 40/30 and I had to serve again. I was shaking,” Atmane said about his match-point conversion. “But then the ball came in somehow and I saw him, he was all the way on the backhand side and he was running on the forehand and I was like, ‘Please don’t touch it, come on. Give me this one, please’.
“I saw that it was a double bounce and game, set and match. I just cannot describe this feeling once again, but I’m super happy, so happy.”
A Historic Run for the World No. 136
Atmane’s remarkable week has seen him become the first qualifier to make the Cincinnati quarter-finals since Max Purcell in 2023. He is also the lowest-ranked player to reach this stage in Cincinnati since Borna Coric, who went on to win the event in 2022.
The Frenchman came through qualifying without dropping a set before defeating Yoshihito Nishioka, Flavio Cobolli, Joao Fonseca, and now Fritz. His next challenge will be seventh seed Holger Rune in the last eight.
Career-High Ranking Secured
“What a week. What a week, I have to say,” said Atmane, who has climbed to a career-best No. 93 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. This marks his debut inside the Top 100. “I’m so happy that finally my work is paying off. But as I said with my coach, this is just a tournament and I need to repeat this kind of level in every single week on a daily basis to be at their spot.”
Serving Power and Revenge Against Fritz
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Atmane struck 13 aces and won 82 per cent of points behind his first serve. The win also evens his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Fritz at 1-1, after the American had beaten him in straight tie-break sets last year in Shanghai.
