Liverpool have launched a huge £260m summer rebuild after winning their record-equalling 19th English league title. Manager Arne Slot wants to combine experienced leaders with fresh signings to stay on top in the Premier League. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah signed new contracts to secure their future at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, two of the Bundesliga’s most exciting players, joined to boost Liverpool’s attack. Jeremie Frimpong arrived to take over from Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. Milos Kerkez came in from Bournemouth as Andy Robertson’s long-term replacement at left-back.

Defence Gets Major Boost

Liverpool are close to signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma. The club are also chasing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in a deal that could break the British transfer record at over £115m.

Breaking from Tradition

Last summer, Liverpool spent little as Slot guided them through his first season in charge. This year, they funded their spending through smart player sales. Selling Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, and Tyler Morton brought in around £200m.

Rebuilding a title-winning squad is rare in England. Since 2007, only Manchester City in 2019 have been champions and the highest spenders in the same summer.

Years of smart management and commercial growth now let Liverpool compete financially with top rivals. “It doesn’t feel Liverpool-like to me,” said Jamie Carragher, speaking about Ekitike possibly playing as a backup to Isak.

Chasing Back-to-Back Titles

Liverpool last won the league in consecutive seasons in 1984. Winning again this year would move them past Manchester United in total league wins. Slot wants to keep the right balance while using his new attacking options.

Pre-season brought plenty of goals, including the Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace on penalties after twice losing the lead. “Now we are better in creating and getting promising situations than we were, in my opinion, throughout the whole of last season,” Slot said. “What made us really strong last season was we only won mostly by a margin of one goal and that had mostly to do with us keeping a clean sheet or as a maximum conceding one goal.”

Playing for Diogo Jota

Liverpool also have extra motivation after the death of Diogo Jota in a car accident in Spain. The 28-year-old Portuguese forward will be honoured with “Forever 20” on the shirts, after the club retired his number.
